Daddy, This is Why I'm so Smart...

The beginning experiments determined that CP-FTMW spectroscopy is a good candidate for studying combustion reactions. In order to test the experimental setup 2,3-Dihydrofuran was utilized. DHF was a good prospect for testing the microwave setup since it's combustion process has been studied before. The pyrolysis studies of DHF previous to this research have determined many of the products formed. Since these studies give such a good background for further research, this compound seemed to be the perfect candidate for these studies.

'Nuff said. Please look at the punctuation (this was unedited).

  3. Yeah... if you're thirteen.

There's a big difference between a private citizen mocking a public figure like Sarah Palin, and a professor posting his students' bad papers online. That's just unprofessional and immature. It can also lead to very real consequences.

  4. Have to agree with the other replies, that this comes off as awfully petty.

Anyway, if we started judging grad students (or, for that matter, post docs and professors) based on their grasp of English, it would be Bedlam.

  5. If there's one thing we've learned from Sarah Palin it's that you don't have to make sense, or use correct grammar, to make people believe you know what you're talking about.

  6. For you Anonymous posters who want me to take this down...I won't. Everything I've posted here is anonymous and, especially, doesn't violate FERPA laws, which is where I could really get in trouble.

A#4, I assume from your post, that you think this person is not a native speaker of English. You are wrong. The person who submitted this thesis to me has been speaking the English language their entire life. And as far as I'm aware, is the only language this person knows how to speak.

Is the title over the top? Of course it is. So is the email sent to me accusing me of being a vindictive person. So, if this person wants me to be vindictive here it is.

What those of you who think this is over-the-top don't understand is that, aside from having a stupid (and quite frankly, vengeful, father), the aptitude of this student is quickly becoming the norm. This is a problem.

What you also don't realize is that if I didn't have the full support of my department, an email like this would ruin my career. That's not to say that the department dismisses the email (although the language of this screed tends to do that on its own), but they recognize that there were deficiencies in the student as well. I have my own problems too, but I don't have my mom emailing the department head how he's undermining my success.

So, am I being 'vengeful' and petty? Sure. But it's not unprovoked. And this is MY venue.

So I'm going to post another petty, vengeful post. Because I have yet to receive an apology.
